Chapter 6

It reaches a target

Colour and lines look at what happened. A target says where you are going.

The target over days 10 to 30The daily sign-ups from day 10 to day 30 as a dark line, with the target as a step line: 30 until day 27 and 35 from day 28. Rings mark the two days the target was reached and written down: day 14, first reached, and day 17, reached again.target 30target 35first reachedreached againday 10day 20day 30
Two events in four days: day 14 reaches the target for the first time, day 15 is still at it and writes nothing, day 16 falls short and writes nothing, day 17 reaches it again. On day 28 the target steps up to 35 and starts unreached.

A target asks a third question: what are you aiming for? It is set on the card, in the card's direction - at least 30 sign-ups, at most 500 in costs. A neutral card has no target.

Every reading is checked against it. The card shows the target and how close the headline is, and remembers the day it was first reached and the last time it was.

Reaching it is written to the history once, and again only after the number has fallen short and reaches it again. A run of good days is one event, not one per reading.

Changing the target is recorded, with the old and the new value. On the time view the target is a step line: flat while it held, with a step on the day it moved. A new target starts unreached, so "first reached" is always about the target in force.

In the example month

An example, not real data.

Day 14
31: the target of 30 is reached for the first time. One event, "target reached: 31", and the card remembers the day.
Day 15
32. Still at the target. Nothing new is written; only the date it was last reached moves.
Day 16
26: short of the target, and nothing is written for that.
Day 17
34. The target is reached again after falling short: one more event.
Day 28
You raise the target to 35. The change is recorded, old and new, the target line steps up, and "first reached" starts over for the new target.
